2007 Read and Lead - "Wild About Reading"

"When you read with your child, you show them that reading is important, but you also show them they're important-that they are so important to you that you will spend 20 minutes a day with your arm around them" - Laura Bush (2003)

What is Read & Lead?

Read & Lead is a 10 week reading program beginning Monday, January 8. The goal is to read 1000 Read & Lead minutes in 10 weeks, and receive awards along the way. Students reaching 1000 minutes in the 10 weeks will also recei e a Reading Medal at a special assembly. You, as a parent or guardian, will be asked to match the number of minutes your child reads out loud. Your child reads aloud to you and you read aloud to them.

Do we add our minutes together?

100 Read & Lead minutes means that the child has read to your for 100 minutes and you have read to them for 100 minutes. Please have your child read above or at their skill level when reading aloud to you. We record minutes in increments of 100. If you turn in a sheet where the column has 110 or 130 minutes you will be givenm credit for only 100 minutes. The extra minutes can be added on to the next sheet. Keep your own "master minute sheet" at home in case you have filled up your minute sheet, or have not received a new one. Then you can transfer minute recordings over to your next sheet. Please supervise the filling out of the recording sheets and sign them.

When do we start and what do we do with the recording sheets?

Reading may start on Monday, January 8th. Minutes read before then do not count. As soon as you or your child starts reading, fill out a sheet starting at 100 minutes. When you have rfinished the first sheet, send it back to school and begin filling out the second sheet. . . 200 minutes, etc. . . Recording of minutes turned in will be done on Mondays so prizes can be awarded during the week. Read & Lead sheetw may be returned in Purple Folders each Monday. Please have recordinf sheets in each Monday by 8:00 a.m. to be counted for that week. When your child reaches the next level, they will have an animal with their nameon it moved up on the Read & Lead bulletin board in the main hall at school. When 1000 minutes have been read by a student they will have made it to the top of the board and earned a Reading Medal.

Additional information for 4th and 5th grade students:

We have found that the program needed to be modified for 4th, 5th and 6th graders. Because so many of the students in these grades are fluent readers it can bge discouraging to read the entire time aloud. We believe good oral skills are vital to maintain, so we have arranged a method to all both silent and oral readings. Your child may read half of their time silently but an adult must still witness and record the minutes. The adult still needs to read all their minutes aloud. Please make sure that your student is reading aloud to your at least 50 minutes of every 100 that you turn in.

6th graders: You may choose to do ALL of your reading silently, which means you will read a total of 200 minutes for each sheet. Fill out BOTH sides of the recording sheet to count at 100 Read & Lead minutes.

Please remember to keep track of your child's minutes at home and make sure our records are the same as yours. At the end of the program any student with 1000 verified minutes recorded and turned in will receive a medal at a special Read and Lead assembly!

If for any reason you DO NOT want your child's name on the bulleting board in the hallway, please fill out and cut off this note and return it to school.
